BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Carolina volleyball team (10-8, 2-4 ACC) earned a four-set victory on the road at Virginia Tech on Sunday afternoon, the team’s second win in conference play.
Four Tar Heels recorded double-doubles in the win, led by Mabrey Shaffmaster who had a match-best 22 kills and 14 digs, her second straight double-double and her sixth of the season.
Charley Niego also had a standout performance, recording her team-best eighth double-double behind 17 kills, 16 digs, four blocks and two aces.
Anita Babic matched her career-best of 46 assists to go with a career-best 13 digs, while Maddy May set two new career-bests with 22 digs and 11 assists.
The Tar Heels outhit the Hokies .255 to .134, while out blocking them 10 to 9, led by six blocks from Kaya Merkler, just one shy of her career-best.
Notables:
- Carolina tallied 84 digs in the match – the most by the Tar Heels since March 5, 2021, at Syracuse
- In her fourth appearance of the season, freshman Sadie Swift set new career-highs in kills (4) and blocks (3)
- For the seventh time this season, three Tar Heels finished the match with double-digit kills – Shaffmaster (22), Niego (17) and Merkler (11)
- Carolina has won the last three matches against the Hokies and four of the last five
- Parker Austin has tallied an ace in all but four matches this season for the Tar Heels
- For just the third time this season, the Tar Heels came back to win after dropping the first set. The other two times were against Virginia and Charlotte
- The Tar Heels are 9-1 on the season when hitting above .200
