US Busts Network Providing Technology To Russian Military – The Associated Press

us-busts-network-providing-technology-to-russian-military-–-the-associated-press

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Biden administration on Wednesday announced a round of criminal charges and sanctions related to a complicated scheme to procure military technologies from U.S. manufacturers and illegally supply them to Russia for its war in Ukraine.

Some of the equipment was recovered on battlefields in Ukraine, the Justice Department said, and other nuclear proliferation technology was intercepted in Latvia before it could be shipped to Russia.

The Justice Department charged nine people in separate cases in New York and Connecticut, as well as two oil brokers for Venezuela. The defendants are accused of acquiring the military technology from U.S. companies and then laundering tens of millions of dollars for wealthy Russian businessmen and other sanctioned entities. Some of the defendants are also accused of brokering illicit oil deals for the Venezuelan state-owned oil company.

“As I have said, our investigators and prosecutors will be relentless in their efforts to identify, locate, and bring to justice those whose illegal acts undermine the rule of law and enable the Russian regime to continue its unprovoked invasion of Ukraine,” Attorney General Merrick Garland said in a statement.

The five defendants charged in New York are all Russian nationals, and two have been arrested. All four defendants in the Connecticut case — three Latvians and one Ukrainian — were taken into custody months ago at the request of U.S. authorities.

The criminal charges complement the latest round of Biden administration sanctions targeting Russia.

The Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control announced sanctions Wednesday against one of the men charged by the Justice Department, designating Yury Orekhov and two of his firms, Nord-Deutsche Industrieanlagenbau GmbH and Opus Energy Trading LLC, for procuring advanced semiconductors and microprocessors used in fighter aircraft and ballistic and hypersonic missile systems among other military uses.

Orekhov and the firms ultimately sent the materials to Russian end-users, including companies designated by various federal agencies, in violation of U.S. export controls.

The Justice Department, Federal Bureau of Investigation, and Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control worked in coordination to identify the Russian network.

Along with sanctions on members of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s inner-circle, the U.S. has frozen Russian Central Bank funds and imposed aggressive export controls.

The latest effort is dedicated to preventing Russia from procuring military technologies.

Deputy Treasury Secretary Wally Adeyemo said in a statement Wednesday that Russia has increasingly struggled to get the technologies it needs to sustain the war “thanks to the unprecedented sanctions and export controls imposed by our broad coalition of partners and allies.”

“We know these efforts are having a direct effect on the battlefield,” he said, “as Russia’s desperation has led them to turn to inferior suppliers and outdated equipment.”

Information from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, presented Friday at the Treasury Department, said Russia has lost more than 6,000 pieces of equipment since the beginning of the war in late February and is turning to Iran and North Korea for supplies.

Russia is reliant on foreign production machinery and ongoing banking sanctions have undercut the Kremlin’s ability to obtain financing for importing military equipment, the ODNI said.

No Laws Broken At Texas Drag Show Even With Child In Audience, Say Police – The Epoch Times

no-laws-broken-at-texas-drag-show-even-with-child-in-audience,-say-police-–-the-epoch-times

A drag show in Texas reportedly took place at a Plano diner in the presence of a child and a local politician alleges the event broke state obscenity laws.

Texas is among the most conservative and Republican states in the country.

“You have liberal Democrat extremists that are trying to push the edges to see what they can get away with,” said State Rep. Matt Shaheen (R-Plano).

Video of the show, which was posted on Twitter, features a dancer at the Ebb and Flow restaurant in The Shops at Legacy lifting their dress to show white panties while twerking suggestively as a little girl watches.

“It was a total disgusting vulgar display of obscenity in my community, and I’m not going to tolerate it,” Shaheen told The Epoch Times. “People are livid.”

The Oct. 15 event was promoted on Ebb and Flow’s Facebook page as a “Garden of Eden Drag Brunch” taking place at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. every third Saturday.

Ebb and Flow, a private establishment, did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

“I can’t speak to the parents that would bring a child to that,” Shaheen said. “That’s just terrible. I think some parents do bring their kids to this kind of trash.”

Plano police told The Epoch Times in a statement that police administrators and legal advisers carefully reviewed the video and determined no laws were broken.

“At this time, no complaints have been filed with the department,” said Jennifer Chapman, public information officer with the Plano Police Department.

“The event was advertised as “18+ adults only. The business owner says he checked ticketed attendees at the door to make sure they understood what they were going to see.”

Under Section 43.21 of the Texas Penal Code, displays or the distribution of obscenity can be charged as a misdemeanor, or a third-degree felony depending on the circumstances.

The video was submitted to the Sheriff’s Office and the Texas Department of Public Safety (TDPS) by Shaheen, however, the Collin County Sheriff’s Office directed inquiries back to the Plano Police Department.

Neither the Denton County Sheriff’s Office nor the TDPS issued a comment.

The city of Plano is in both Collin and Denton counties.

Mississippi Rolls Out Mobile ID For Statewide Elections – The Associated Press – En Español

mississippi-rolls-out-mobile-id-for-statewide-elections-–-the-associated-press-–-en-espanol

JACKSON, Miss (AP) — Mississippi voters will be able to use their smartphones as voter identification in the November election, marking the first real test of a new statewide program that integrates technology into the voting process.

The program was launched last year in the form of an Apple and Android app. It stores a resident’s driver’s license in digital form and allows someone to use their phone in places they would typically show a license, such as voting locations.

Keith Davis, deputy commissioner for the Department of Public Safety, told WLBT-TV that around 100,000 people have downloaded the app, and more than 51,000 residents signed up for the digital driver’s license.

Industry experts have estimated that the coronavirus pandemic sped up the widespread adoption of contactless identification methods by at least a decade.

Mississippi is one of 10 states with a “fully engaged” mobile identification program, Davis said. Idemia, a multinational technology company headquartered in France, was contracted by DPS to build the app. The company has launched similar apps in several other states.

Davis said DPS is also working to build a system that would allow people in Mississippi to use their phone instead of their license to check in with the Transportation Security Administration before boarding a flight.

“We are working with Idemia as well as the other states that are rolling out mobile ID, working with TSA to get that put into place,” Davis told the news station.

Tee Grizzley Says He’s Done Rapping, Video Games And Movies Only – TMZ

tee-grizzley-says-he’s-done-rapping,-video-games-and-movies-only-–-tmz

Tee Grizzley All Rap Sounds the Same … Taking My Talents to Movies, Gaming!!!

10/19/2022 1:19 PM PT

Tee Grizzley just released his new album, “Chapters of the Trenches,” and the Detroit-born rapper’s fans better soak it up, ’cause it’s also his last — he’s closing the book on his music career!!!

The video game industry has been kind to Tee (and his pockets) amid the COVID-19 quarantine. During a new interview with Bootleg Kev, he claimed to bring in six-figures monthly from his growing “GTA” role-playing empire alone.

According to Tee, he hasn’t been to a club in a minute and would rather sit at home making bank online than risk an altercation for an appearance fee … even if leaving five figures on the table makes his manager Melissa Tuan upset.

TG’s denouncing rap altogether — he says it all sounds the same now — so, he’s rebranding himself as a professional gamer and part-time movie director who’s tired of the BS within the music industry.

With “GTA6” currently in development, the digital sky’s the limit for TG’s Grizzley World.

Waiting for your permission to load the Instagram Media.

Part of the reason he could be backing away from hip hop is the recent loss of his close friend PnB Rock, who TG saw in September, the day before he was murdered.

TG says genuine friends in the music industry are hard to come by, making the loss that much more crippling.

Bartonville Council Approves Whataburger Restaurant – The Cross Timbers Gazette

bartonville-council-approves-whataburger-restaurant-–-the-cross-timbers-gazette

The Bartonville Town Council voted unanimously Tuesday night to approve a Conditional Use Permit for a new Whataburger restaurant on the eastern corner of Blanco Drive and FM 407.

The new restaurant will be open 24/7, and it needed council approval because of the drive-thru window. The site plan shows that traffic will use Blanco Drive to get into the parking lot, and there won’t be any direct access to FM 407.

During the public hearing, about a dozen people — mostly Blanco Drive residents — spoke in opposition to the proposal, citing concerns about safety, noise and an increase in traffic on Blanco Drive. Many were especially opposed to the 24-hour nature of the business.

“The wrong elements are going to be invited into Bartonville and Lantana because of the 24/7,” said Charles Nuber. “What are you inviting into the area?”

After hearing previously voiced concerns, Whataburger changed the orientation of the site plan to have the drive-thru speakers facing toward Blanco Drive, away from the homes in Lantana. A police officer will be on-site from midnight to 4 a.m. on weekends.

No construction timeline has been announced.

Report: Former Misfits Top Laner Irrelevant May Be Joining SK Gaming For 2023 LEC Spring Split – Dot Esports

report:-former-misfits-top-laner-irrelevant-may-be-joining-sk-gaming-for-2023-lec-spring-split-–-dot-esports

A member of the former Misfits LEC roster appears to have found a new home.

Joel “Irrelevant” Miro Scharoll, former top laner for Misfits, has made a “verbal agreement” to join the upcoming lineup of SK Gaming, according to Alejandro Gomis of Blix.gg. This move follows the departure of Misfits from the entirety of the LEC and ERLs. The organization is being replaced by Team Heretics as of the 2023 Spring Split and into the foreseeable future.

Sources: Irrelevant reached a verbal agreement with SK Gaming 🇩🇪 and will be the toplaner in LEC 🇪🇺.

SK Gaming has significantly increased its budget and is targeting big players this off season.

Details⬇https://t.co/uPy9m3PwMR

— Alejandro Gomis (@anonimotum) October 19, 2022

Irrelevant debuted as part of the Misfits roster this past summer after being a part of the organization’s LFL team last year. Misfits shocked fans and players alike during the 2022 Summer Split after announcing the organization’s departure from League of Legends by successfully taking down some of the strongest teams in the region and advancing to the LEC playoffs.

For SK Gaming, however, 2022 wasn’t too kind. Though the team found a handful of upset victories throughout the year, the organization as a whole has struggled immensely to make an impact on the LEC since its debut in 2019.

Gomis reported that Irrelevant “received great interest from many LEC teams” but decided to cement a verbal agreement with SK, seemingly implying that the organization is increasing its funding for its team in the 2023 LEC season. No information regarding Irrelevant’s move to SK has been confirmed at this time.

LEC fans can look forward to supporting the region at the 2022 League of Legends World Championship when Rogue takes on the LPL’s JDG tomorrow to start the quarterfinals in New York City. The 2023 LEC Spring Split is expected to begin early next year.

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz S580 Review, Grand Luxury And Technology – Torque News

the-2022-mercedes-benz-s580-review,-grand-luxury-and-technology-–-torque-news

the 2022 mercedes benz s580 review back designAs I am reviewing the 2022 Mercedes-Benz 580S, I am thinking, who to recommend this very expensive car. I don’t know. Perhaps the supper wealthy (although I believe people should live humbly and not extravagantly). So why test this expensive vehicle that only a few people can afford.

The good news, in fact, is that most of the new technologies that one can find in the 2022 Mercedes S580will be echoed in our cars within a few years. So we are discovering them in advance, even if it means test-driving it for a week for this review.

The S-Class is a benchmark for luxury, comfort, innovation and technology. Even today, it is aimed at the ultra-wealthy, but with the introduction of the 2022 EQS EV, the large electric sedan, I seriously wonder whether it can still present itself as the true flagship of Mercedes-Benz.

The Mercedes-Benz S Class is one of the most revered cars in automotive history. Countless technologies and innovations were initially introduced in one or another generation of the S-Class. The first S appeared in 1951, but the principle of the limousine at Mercedes-Benz dates back to 1903.

Exterior

At the front, the S-Class has the manufacturer’s most advanced optical units. Powerful, 1 million pixel matrix laser illumination elements frame oncoming vehicles to prevent glare. The radiator grille changes a little in its shape, and we still retain the traditional silver star in the bonnet ornament.

The S580 is long, and that’s normal considering its vocation. If ever the optics of owning a 5,289 millimeter car intimidates you, count on the “short” S500 at 5,119 millimeters. Even if it is completely revised, it maintains its semi-circular roof arch. For the rest, everything is smooth with a character line in the upper part that stretches over the entire body.

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz S580 Review front exterior

The S580 looks like a limousine. As the Mercedes S580 is longer than the S550 Its S500, my test car’s longer wheelbase allowed for spectacular rear-seat clearance. Even the doors to give access to it are excessively large. And the two doors open very widely.

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz S580 Review rear view

Under the hood, the 2022 Mercedes S580 offers a noteworthy arsenal. Torque News got the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 in our car. Its power: 496 horsepower and some 21 additional horsepower with the EQ Boost function. It is a very light hybrid mode. The 9-speed gearbox is installed in addition, as is the all-wheel drive. In addition, the directional rear wheels are an additional element for driving assistance. When you buy a car like this the fuel economy probably will not interest you. But we should care and be caring people. The 2022 Mercedes-Benz S580 gets 19 miles per gallon and 16/25 city/high MPG respectively.

Interior

What defines first and foremost an S-Class is the luxury of its cabin. This W223 is no exception. The interior design mixes high quality materials. The finish borders on obsession, and for once in a modern Mercedes-Benz, it doesn’t crack. Comfort is obvious, front or rear. There’s very little you can’t do with these seats. Heated and ventilated, of course, but we also offer several different massage styles. Adjustable in all directions, we find our account.

It’s not so much the engine that impresses with its novelty, it’s more the interior comfort of driving. Imagine, a car so quiet that it’s like being in a sound booth. A high-end sound system is also in order. A large central screen displays the controls in a system called MBUX whose ergonomics are intuitive, and voice commands easy to use. Speaking of the MBUX: the MBUX Interior Assist, which recognizes gestures as well as hand movements towards the touchscreen or touchpad and highlights or activates the desired content, is one of the novelties in the 2022 S580. Another notable addition to the 2022 model year, is the availability of the company’s E-Active Body Control in the lineup.

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz S580 Review front interior

The augmented reality navigation function and voice commands also receive some updates to be even more natural. AR navigation now projects a sharper readout on the head-up display. Of course, the fluidity, graphics, sharpness and handling of all screens and cameras cannot be faulted

Basically, the car simply acts as a personal assistant. An additional example: at the bottom of the screen, the S580 has a fingerprint reader that allows it to recognize you and associate you with a predetermined profile. Put your finger down, the seat will position itself for you, the heater will adjust and you’ll have your favorite station.

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz S580 Review rear seat

The Burmester Surround 4D audio system distributes all the sound through 30 loudspeakers distributed throughout the cabin. The atmosphere is subdued by the ambient lighting which consists of fiber optics distributed every 1.6 centimeters. You will find more than 250 all around you..

Inside, the experience appeals to minimalism and quality. The leathers remind us of the most classic Mercedes, real leathers, very luxurious and with a thick texture. The same can be said of the wood finishes and metallic textures. In other words, the focus is much more the sensory experience, what you can touch and see. For the same reason, Mercedes worked a lot on the user experience: doors with soft opening and closing, soft cushions on the headrests, state-of-the-art ambient lighting, etc.

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz S580 Review trunk

Regarding the trunk, both body options (the S500 and S580) cover a total of 550 liters in the internal combustion versions. This figure is reduced to 350 liters in the plug-in hybrid. In addition, the trunk is not upholstered in its upper part, with exposed sheet metal. It does have lighting, a 12 V socket, some fasteners and various bags with cables and accessories.

Another great novelty is that the S-Class has more than 50 electronic devices that can be updated over-the-air (wirelessly).

As for driving, softness is in order, silence too, but the power develops without any hesitation.

The Mercedes S580 is a giant in its world. By its dimensions of course, but above all by its disconcerting ease in offering comfort and softness.

Among the models that aspire to rival the S-Class we find other sedans in its class, including Audi A8, BMW 7 Series, Lexus LS and Genesis G90. However, given the aspirations of the S-Class and the possibility of accessing very exclusive versions under the Maybach emblem, the S-Class can also be considered as a rival to the Bentley Flying Spur and Rolls-Royce Ghost.

P.S. The 2022 Mercedes-Benz S 580 that Torque News reviewed came with AMG floor mats, but this was not the AMG S 580. I guess Mercedes Benz USA likes to throw a couple of AMG items to make the car look “cooler.”

Bitcoin (BTC) Vs Cardano (ADA) Vs The Hideaways (HDWY) – Price Analysis By Top Traders – Cryptonews

bitcoin-(btc)-vs-cardano-(ada)-vs-the-hideaways-(hdwy)-–-price-analysis-by-top-traders-–-cryptonews

club hideawaysBitcoin (BTC) is the top cryptocurrency in the market, followed by other coins like Cardano (ADA). Lately, BTC seems to suffer from price declines, dropping 72% during the crypto winter.

After one final decline in the cryptocurrency market, the price of BTC may have reached the end of its correction.

Cardano (ADA) is gaining popularity for its NFTs. The same goes for The Hideaways (HDWY), a new crypto project focusing on luxury real estate NFTs.

Bitcoin’s Relative Strength Index Painted Red

Since reaching a peak of $25,211 in August  2022, the price of BTC has been falling inside a declining wedge. The decline brought the price to a low of $18,125 in September.

Currently, BTC is trading at $19,416, marginally higher than in previous months but not much of a big leap.

The coin’s RSI is down in the red line at 39.89, overcoming the 30-mark indicator, indicating the possibility of a bullish trend.

Cardano NFTs Steals The Show

Cardano (ADA) is putting more effort into improving its NFTs, gaining positive feedback from investors. Given the financial potential of digital collectibles, the network promised to make this project one of the highlights of its roadmap.

According to a reputable analyst, this work will not go in vain because ADA NFTs are now the best NFTs on the market.

There are over 56,0000 NFTs launched in the Cardano platform, minting millions of NFTs. Cardano already has a developing ecosystem of NFT minting engines and marketplaces.

The Hideaways NFTs Is The Future Of Crypto And Potential Top 10 Market Cap Coin

Investors have been eager to invest in crypto projects with real-world utilities, and their dreams finally came true with The Hideaways ($HDWY). It’s a platform that lets users access properties worldwide backed by NFTs.

Maritime Sustainment Technology Innovation Consortium Reaches Its 300th Member Milestone – DVIDS

maritime-sustainment-technology-innovation-consortium-reaches-its-300th-member-milestone-–-dvids

The Naval Surface Warfare Center, Philadelphia Division-created Maritime Sustainment Technology Innovation Consortium (MSTIC) recently reached its 300th member milestone as Systel, Inc. based in Sugar Land, Texas was recently added to the membership.

Established in June 2021, the MSTIC has worked to promote a culture of open communication through the Other Transaction Authority (OTA). According to the MSTIC website (mstic.org), the OT is a “streamlined purchasing vehicle that brings innovative research findings and state-of-the-art prototypes from industry to the federal government. OT-based collaborations are not subject to some of the regulations that apply to Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR)-based acquisitions,” which, “allows government and industry to communicate more openly, from requirement generation to the proposal stage.”

With the added freedom the OTA affords, the MSTIC can boast a diverse group of traditional and non-traditional defense contractors, allowing NSWCPD to stay at the forefront of technological advancements.

“The MSTIC is a collection of traditional and non-traditional Defense Contractors, large and small businesses that are well qualified, providing a unique capability in relevant technology areas and accelerating the developmental path to greater innovative solutions and ideas to government requirements,” MSTIC Agreements Officer Alicia McPeters said.

Advanced Technology International (ATI), a non-profit, was awarded the NSWCPD’s first OTA back in June 2021 to create and manage the MSTIC under the OT Authority.

McPeters and the rest of the team tasked with awarding the OT Agreement along with ATI added four more members to the MSTIC since the milestone membership count was reached.

To date, the 304 MSTIC members include six academic institutions, five non-profit organizations, 102 large businesses, and 191 small businesses. The OTA continues to help foster innovation for NSWCPD with 242 of the MSTIC members categorized as nontraditional contractors.

“Ultimately, the MSTIC will bring best-in-class solutions to our warfighters and missions by utilizing the OTA for prototype projects. The OTA is the tool to our success and MSTIC is the collaboration team of innovators that will develop the sustainment solutions to address current and future threats in our maritime environments,” McPeters said on the OTA’s usefulness and the MSTIC’s importance to the NSWCPD.

The MSTIC’s future only looks brighter with many developments planned in the coming years and large amounts of funding being given to members.

“To date, the team has awarded seven Prototype Project Orders with an estimated value of $7.3 million. These Prototype Projects support various solutions across the command, including a range of efforts such as research and development prototype solutions for energy-efficient thermal technology management, data collection, and analytics of various ships systems, as well as commercial solutions for form, fit, and function on standard Navy components. An additional 21 Project Order awards are anticipated for Fiscal Year 2023 Quarter 1, valued at approximately $56.9 million,” McPeters said.

NSWCPD employs approximately 2,800 civilian engineers, scientists, technicians, and support personnel. The NSWCPD team does the research and development, test and evaluation, acquisition support, and in-service and logistics engineering for the non-nuclear machinery, ship machinery systems, and related equipment and material for Navy surface ships and submarines. NSWCPD is also the lead organization providing cybersecurity for all ship systems.

The regulators are probing whether the Singapore-based fund over-stated the strength of its balance sheet and did not register with agencies, according to the report which cited two people familiar with the matter.

3AC and CFTC did not respond to Reuters’ requests for comment. The SEC declined to comment.

3AC was one of the more prominent crypto firms before its fall following a broad downturn in the digital currency market and the collapse of Terra blockchain.

The firm sustained losses on its position in the Terra blockchain project, which crashed after the stablecoin TerraUSD crumbled in May.

As the token’s collapse spread across the broader crypto market over the following weeks, 3AC was unable to meet margin calls from its lenders and eventually declared insolvency. read more

The market crash also caused other firms such as Celsius Network, Voyager Digital and Vauld to fold.

U.S. Lawmakers Want To Boost Oversight Of Foreign Government Broadcast Sponsorship – Reuters

us.-lawmakers-want-to-boost-oversight-of-foreign-government-broadcast-sponsorship-–-reuters

WASHINGTON, Oct 17 (Reuters) – A bipartisan group of lawmakers on Monday introduced legislation to strengthen the authority of the Federal Communications Commission to oversee foreign sponsorships of U.S. broadcast TV and radio programs.

Democratic Senator Brian Schatz, Republican Senator Marsha Blackburn and Representative Anna Eshoo, a Democrat, proposed giving the FCC authority to compel broadcasters to check foreign media databases to better identify groups sponsoring programming.

“Foreign governments shouldn’t be able to hide behind shell companies to fund misinformation and propaganda on American airwaves,” Schatz said.

Blackburn said foreign governments currently “can use shell companies to broadcast regime-funded propaganda across American airwaves. This legislation will protect consumer transparency by requiring the disclosure of foreign government-sponsored content.”

In July, a U.S. appeals court struck down an FCC requirement that broadcasters check federal sources to verify sponsors’ identities. The FCC rules finalized in April 2021 require foreign-government sponsorship disclosure at the time of a broadcast if a foreign governmental entity paid a radio or television station, directly or indirectly, to air material.

The bill would not prohibit foreign governments from sponsoring content on U.S. airwaves.

The court noted that the FCC had raised concerns “that the Chinese and Russian governments have been secretly leasing air time to broadcast propaganda on American radio.”

The issue took on new urgency in the aftermath of Russia’s Feb. 24 invasion of Ukraine.

FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel praised the effort in Congress to “increase transparency and ensure consumers know who is behind the information transmitted over public airwaves.”

Earlier this month, the FCC issued a revised proposal to identify foreign governmental entities, including a certification process with standardized language for broadcasters to use in order to demonstrate appropriate inquiries have been made.

The National Association of Broadcasters challenged the 2021 FCC rule requiring independent checks, arguing it would result in “onerous requirements to … conduct independent research on all the entities with whom broadcasters currently or will in the future have lease agreements.”

5G Network Rollout: Nokia, Ericsson Bag Jio’s $3-Bn Contracts – The Indian Express

5g-network-rollout:-nokia,-ericsson-bag-jio’s-$3-bn-contracts-–-the-indian-express

Reliance Jio, the country’s largest telecom service provider, on Monday awarded long-term contracts to global gear makers Ericsson and Nokia to roll out its standalone 5G network.

Though the value of the contracts was not disclosed by the companies, industry estimates have pegged the total value around $3 billion, divided equally between the two vendors.

In August, Bharti Airtel had awarded similar contracts to Nokia, Ericsson and Samsung for rolling out its 5G network. The value is estimated to be similar.

Going ahead, Jio is likely to award one more contract to South Korean major Samsung, which has built its 4G network.

The developments conclusively show that Chinese vendors like Huawei are not going to be part of the country’s 5G network.

As per the contract, Ericsson will deploy its energy-efficient 5G radio access network products and solutions for Jio’s 5G network rollout, whereas Nokia will supply equipment such as base stations, high-capacity 5G Massive MIMO (multiple input, multiple output) antennas, and remote radio heads to support different spectrum bands, and network software.

Ericsson and Nokia would be paid upon achievement of certain milestones laid down by the telecom service provider. The structure of the contract involves building, operating and maintaining the network.

Jio’s core network is already up and running, built by the company itself. Once these radios are put on the towers, the 5G coverage will get enhanced.

Jio has already started beta trial of its 5G services in four cities – Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Varanasi. It has said that its 5G services will be available on a pan-India basis by December 2023 at a total outlay of $2 trillion.

“Jio transformed the digital landscape in India with the launch of LTE (4G) services in 2016. We are confident that Jio’s 5G network will accelerate India’s digitalisation and will serve as the foundation for achieving our nation’s ‘Digital India’ vision,” Akash Ambani, chairman of Reliance Jio, said.

Unlike its peers Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea, Jio is deploying its 5G network on standalone architecture, which it calls a ‘true 5G’ solution. In standalone 5G architecture, the network deployed is independent of the 4G network. According to experts, the standalone architecture does not have a developed ecosystem at present but every telco would have to switch to this architecture eventually to unleash the varied use cases of 5G and give an optimum experience of the new technology to the users.

According to Jio, its standalone 5G network deployment represents a major technology leap as it modernises the network infrastructure to deliver a transformative 5G experience to consumers and enterprises with advanced features.

For Ericsson and Nokia, India is one of the top markets in terms of business opportunity.

“India is building world-class digital infrastructure that will drive innovation, job creation and entrepreneurship across the country. We are happy to partner with Jio in those ambitions, through Ericsson 5G standalone connectivity, which will be a major catalyst in meeting those digital transformation goals across society, enterprise and industry,” Borje Ekholm, president and chief executive officer (CEO) of Ericsson, said.

“This (deal with Jio) is a significant win for Nokia in an important market and a new customer with one of the largest RAN (radio access network) footprints in the world. This ambitious project will introduce millions of people across India to premium 5G services, enabled by our industry-leading AirScale portfolio. We are proud that Reliance Jio has placed its trust in our technology and we look forward to a long and productive partnership with them,” Pekka Lundmark, president and CEO at Nokia, said.

Currently, only limited users are able to use 5G services as handset makers are yet to launch the required software updates on the 5G-enabled devices. Simultaneously, the telecom operators are working to extend the coverage of 5G network across the cities. FE
